Consumable Certification Explained MIG wire image
It pays to know the differences among the various types and which certifications you need for each job

The certification of welding consumables can be a confusing, daunting issue. There are different verification systems, terminology, requirements, and levels of certification. ISO or ASME? Mill test report or filler metal certificate? Heat number or controlled chemical composition? Certificate of conformance or certified material test report?

For a clear explanation of these issues, and an introduction to Lincoln Electric's Q-Cert Program, request a free copy of "Sorting out Certifications for Welding Consumables", which appeared in the July 2007 issue of Welding Journal.

How I Did It - 1: Parade Cars

Parade car images Karl "Bud" Kovacs of Kovacs Machine Company wrote:

We were asked to build two parade cars. A local volunteer fire department had two 1930 Fords that they had used in parades in the mid-1950s and 1960s. The cars had been in storage since 1966 and were in poor condition. After we tore the cars down to the frames, we decided we needed a new MIG welder to build the sub-frames for the project.

Since we have been a Welders Supply (Erie, PA) customer for many years, we asked the sales person for an opinion on what type of welder we needed. After many options were discussed, we chose the Lincoln® SP-135 MIG Welder.

Our Lincoln® SP-135 worked absolutely perfect!! We spent many hours welding without ever having a problem.

Thanks for a great machine!!

How I Did It - 2: Barbeque Pit

BBQ Pit images Dave Lankford has built three barbeque pits of the size pictured here and several smaller ones for family and friends. He uses a Lincoln® SP-135 115/120-volt wire feeder welder and has recently purchased the 208/230-volt model SP-175.

He hopes to build a pit for himself someday.

"I am sold on Lincoln products. Everything I did with my SP-135 and yet it is still going strong. I know the SP-135 was not made for the projects I put it through, but it worked flawlessly. I have not done anything to this machine except blow it out with my air compressor on occasions. People try to get me to look at Miller, but I refuse. The only brand I will purchase is Lincoln."

These project images and descriptions have been published to show how individuals used their ingenuity for their own needs, convenience and enjoyment. Only limited details are available and the projects have NOT been engineered by the Lincoln Electric® Company. Therefore, when you use the ideas for projects of your own, you must develop your own details and plans and the safety and performance of your work is your responsibility.
