U.S. Non-Residential Construction Starts Drop 5 Percent in July

July starts were valued at $33.6 Billion, down 5.2 percent compared to June. The report, prepared by ConstructConnect, indicates there is normally a 3.5 percent increase from June to July. Also, July is typically the last month of the year with a seasonal lift in starts, as starts usually decline month-to-month for the remainder of the year. On the other hand, non-residential starts in 2016 are currently running 11.6 percent ahead of 2015. Bright spots include schools/colleges and hospitals, up 14 and 42 percent year to date. MORE

Contrasting a Skilled Trades Education with a 4-Year Degree Education

We know students are under a lot of pressure to consider a 4-year degree, but it’s often not the best option. This Detroit Metro Times article cites a Harvard Graduate School of Education study that sheds some light on college success rates. Just 56% of 4-year college students complete a degree within six years. Only 29% of two-year degree students finish in three years. At four-year for-profit schools, 78% FAIL to earn a degree. And, over 22% of 4-year graduates are unemployed or underemployed. To top it off, a four-year degree costs an average $98,824, while skilled trade certificate students spend an average $33,000 to earn an average $35,720 and start their careers two years earlier!
