Choosing a Tube Frame Engine-Driven Welder

Tube frame welder image Engine-driven welders are typically used when electric power isn’t available. Many of these applications require welders that are easy to transport. Compact tube frame welders with small gasoline engines are an ideal choice. Tube frame engine-driven welders are more easily lifted by hand or with a crane from the back of a pick-up truck right to the jobsite. They are ideal for contractors, maintenance crews, farmers and ranchers.

Learn what key features you should consider when selecting a tube frame welder for your welding and repair needs.

How I Did It: Feline Hand Railing
From: Rich Rowe

Cat Hand Railing image I am a welding instructor at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. My wife Anne and I like cats. We have five at this time. Two years ago I decided to make her a one of a kind cat railing using the GMAW process [MIG] for our back porch.

Each cat was hand drawn with soap stone by me, and cut out using the plasma arc or oxy-fuel processes. I was hoping to finish for Christmas, but the railing was completed the following June.

The railing is one dimension, but I twisted the tails, and turned and/or tilted the cat heads to give them some depth and uniqueness. The material is 10 and 11 gauge mild steel and the whiskers are short electrode stubs. I used an open vice of about an inch or so and the ball end of a ball peen hammer to shape the electrode stubs. One must turn the electrodes to get the wavy look.

The spindles are made from ends from my shop. The posts are made from 10 gauge 2 x 2 inch square tube and the bottom bar is 11 gauge 1 x 2 inch rectangular tube. I used a 1/4" x 2" flat bar for the top bar, drilled to accept 3/16 x 1-1/2 inch lag bolts and used a 2 x 6 inch exterior wood top painted. This railing was painted Hammer tone metallic black. I used 1/4" X 1-1/2 lag bolts to secure the rail to the deck.

These project images and descriptions have been published to show how individuals used their ingenuity for their own needs, convenience and enjoyment. Only limited details are available and the projects have NOT been engineered by the Lincoln Electric® Company. Therefore, when you use the ideas for projects of your own, you must develop your own details and plans and the safety and performance of your work is your responsibility.
