Au Sable River Longboat
by Todd Zwetzig
Todd Zwetzig is a fly fishing guide on the Au Sable River, located in the northern area of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. On one stretch of the river it is tradition to fish out of a longboat called an Au Sable River Longboat. People have used them on the "Holy Water" of the Au Sable for over 100 years.
Normally these longboats are built out of wood. However, Todd felt the need to fabricate one from aluminum (only two other aluminum longboats currently exist). Outfitted with his Lincoln Electric Weld-Pak® 180HD wire feeder welder and Magnum® 100SG Spool Gun, he set to work.
Over the course of the next 3 weeks, Todd built the boat from scratch in his garage.
Todd used .090-inch 5083 aluminum sheets for bottom and sides, schedule 40 aluminum pipe for the gunnel, and 1-inch x 3-inch aluminum tube for the braces. The boat is 30-inches wide on the bottom, 15-inches high on the sides, and 24-feet long.
Todd said, "Your products did an amazing job and I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks."
