U.S. Non-Residential Construction Starts Drop 5 Percent in July

July starts were valued at $33.6 Billion, down 5.2 percent compared to June. The report, prepared by ConstructConnect, indicates there is normally a 3.5 percent increase from June to July. Also, July is typically the last month of the year with a seasonal lift in starts, as starts usually decline month-to-month for the remainder of the year. On the other hand, non-residential starts in 2016 are currently running 11.6 percent ahead of 2015. Bright spots include schools/colleges and hospitals, up 14 and 42 percent year to date. MORE

Economists Predict Construction Growth in 2017

Economists representing three different construction industry associations predicted non-residential construction growth in the 3 to 4 percent range for 2017. Privately financed commercial construction will lead and energy-related construction will become ‘less of a drag’ in 2017. One leading indicator is that is revenue at architecture firms continues to grow in 2016. The three groups were Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), American Institute of Architects (AIA) and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). MORE


Ohio Turnpike Approves Drone for Bridge Inspection

Cleveland.com reported last week that a drone will be used in September to complete inspection of the 970- foot Sandusky River Bridge. The goal is to reduce time and expense as well as safety for motorists and inspectors.  Drone flying will be handled by senseFly, a commercial drone services company. To evaluate the success of this trial, the results will be compared to an in-person inspection as well. MORE
