A Profile in Determination – Cheboygan Area High Competes at Ferris State     

Take a minute to read this profile of the instructor and team from Cheboygan Area High School, which recently completed and placed in the Ferris State University Secondary Welding Competition. More than 35 schools competed, up from 13 a few years ago. Students competed for a Lincoln Electric POWER MIG® welder and up to $1,000 in scholarships. Each high school student profiled is motivated to prepare for a career in welding, whether as a production fabricator, an underwater welder or a welding engineer. Ferris has a two year waiting list to get into their welding engineering program and, typically, 100% job placement. Southwest VA Opens Advanced Manufacturing Center 

The folks in southwest Virginia are taking a forward view to transition their region from an economy based on one industry to a future based on many new industries. With recent declines in the coal industry, the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors opened Southwest Virginia Advanced Manufacturing Center in Bluefield. The state-of-the-art facility, funded by the Virginia Tobacco Commission, will prepare a labor pool trained and certified to help attract new advanced jobs to the region. MORE 

Allen County Ohio Works to Build a Home Field Advantage

In Allen County, OH alone, 300-500 senior high school students learn each year they will not be attending college as originally intended. Without a backup plan and little knowledge of skilled trades, these students typically drift into minimum wage food service or lawn care jobs. The Home Field Advantage program is designed to provide a coach to each one of these students to match their aptitude and ambition with programs that will prepare them for one of the 1,500 open skilled trade jobs in the Lima area alone. Local employers, realizing that home-grown talent is more stable, are partnering with the program to provide opportunities. MORE 

Only One Worker in the Education Pipeline for Every Five Retiring Tradespeople

Governor Bill Haslam of Tennessee put it plainly last week, “For every five skilled tradesmen about to retire; only one new worker is in the education, training and apprenticeship pipeline to replace them”. He also indicated the Tennessee “construction industry is expected to grow 22 percent over the next decade”.  These are just two of the talking points used in Haslam’s Go Build Tennessee campaign supported by an excellent web site.
