Today, manufacturers can choose welding consumables that provide both excellent productivity and lower generation of welding fume. This is in line with continuing industry trends toward the
reduction of welder exposure to welding fumes and control of the welding fumes generated.
Outershield MC710-H is widely applied in industry and has gained popularity because it combines ease of use and high productivity with good mechanical properties. Being one of the best consumables in this group, it reflects typical advantages of metal cored wires:
► Lower welding costs coming from higher productivity, both on CV and advanced pulse modes,
► More flexible and well directed arc, features helping to reduce training time and increase quality of welds,
► Regular and spatter free welds combined with resistance against porosity,
► Similar to GMAW welding techniques and exactly the same types of power sources applied.
Metal cored wire, such as Outershield MC710-H, is a very good solution for thin sheet material, and is also one of the best solutions for semiautomatic welding of multipass welds and thicker plates. Metal cored wire, however, is typically not considered a low-fume generating welding process. Per Figure 1, below, the FER for the MCAW (M21) process is typically lower than the FER of the GMAW (CO2) process and higher than the FER of the GMAW (Pulse)2 process.

Fume Emission Rate of classical Lincoln Electric and other metal cored is illustrated in more detailed way in Fig. 2.

Welding safety at first manufacturers have a number of options in choosing optimal welding consumable to weld with optimum productivity and lower emission of hazardous substances. Continuing trend towards the reduction of welder exposures to welding fumes is observed. Welding fumes containing hazardous dust particles are controlled and suppliers of welding consumables have to supply information on Fume Emission Rate (FER) and/or chemical composition according to ISO 15011.
Lincoln Electric’s research and development team have been working to create new possibilities to address industry needs, such as reduction of welding fume generation. Through the innovative use of raw materials, Lincoln Electric is proud to present the new Outershield® MC710RF-H. The electrode is classified as:
- AWS A5.18 E70C-6M H4,
- EN ISO 17632-A: T 46 3 M M 2 H5.

Outershield MC710RF-H has the same performance characteristics of all metal cored wires from the Outershield range:
► Excellent weldability and feedability,
► Spatter free and focused arc,
► Regular welds with very little slag ,
► Good mechanical properties according to classification.
In addition to these performance characteristics, Outershield MC710RF-H offers up to a
24% reduction in Fume Emission Rate comparing to Outershield® MC710-H.
Reference2 (Fig. 1) describes the typical range of FER for metal cored wires as between 5 and 22mg/s (0,3-1,3g/min). Outershield MC710RF-H gives FER between 6 and 8 mg/s when welding at industrial parameters and
is definitely one of the lowest fume generating metal cored wires in its class.
